Day 1: Boyertown to Lockport Illinois 746 miles

Friday, June 4th 2010

Depart Home at 7:12am Eastern time... then again at 7:15 am Eastern time. Why? because I left Neil's Tastykake's on the kitchen counter, even though I spent 10 minutes mentally checking to be sure I have everything.

About 3/4 of the way to Pittsburg I saw a swarm of Scirroccos. VW Scirroccos, that is. About 7 of them travelling together, one after the other. It was like a club or something. Must have been going to some show or something. They seemed happy enough. I just thought, what an odd car to collect.

It also boggles my mind the amount of crap the human brain is capable of holding. I had my i-pod plugged into my car and was listening. Now, unlike many people I know, I don't think I could name 1,000 songs if my life depended on it, so I only have 537 songs on my i-pod, and that's enough for me. So, that by itself is not mind boggling. The fact that I know every song on there, title and verse and with the harmony to go with it is staggering. Some of the songs on my i-pod are songs I listened to when I was a teenager. Suffice it to say that was a long time ago. Yet, play the introduction to the song and all the lyrics are just immediately available. I doubt even the best programmer could come up with an algorithm to accomplish that.

Overall, an uneventful ride... the best kind. A little bit of rain on the west side of  Indiana but otherwise nothing. Car performed like a champ and gave me 25 miles per gallon despite the A/C being on almost the whole trip. Only needed gas once, about halfway through Ohio.

Arrived in Lockport at about 6:15 local time, having gotten an hour back somewhere in Indiana. Had dinner at George's, a little local restaurant in Lockport. I had a BLT club and fries and to my amazement, the clam chowder was home made, not from a can. Wait staff very attentive. Food delicious. Then back to Neil's and getting caught up with life.

Route  This is the route I took as shown on Google Maps.

Tomorrow: an open day. Whatever sounds interesting will be on the agenda.

  1. Try to stay awake through the immensely boring drive through Ohio and Indiana. And no dalliances at the Rutherford B. Hayes museum (like last time).

  2. Yes. I have downloaded 50GB of heavy metal music for my i-Pod and I have a gallon and a half of coffee in the back seat. If I feel myself drifting or getting the urge to 'experience Rutherford B Hayes' I will tap into those resources. See you tomorrow!
